DANCE STYLES
At Harlow School of Dance many forms of dance styles are available. Our Policy is to provide a safe, educational and recreational environment for all ages. Our well supervised classes are taught by qualified and experienced teachers in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere.
For those students who want to attend once or twice a week, just for fun we have recreational classes available. They enjoy the energy they create from dancing but are not looking to make a career out of the skills they are learning. These students do not want to compete in eisteddfods, but still have the opportunity to perform in our Concert each year.
For those students who are dedicated to becoming the best dancer and performer they can be we recommend studying all styles of dance to reach their fullest potential. These students thrive on hard work, love the thrill of competing and many are aspiring towards a career in the dance industry. There is also the opportunity to be selected for public performances and tours.
CLASSICAL BALLET
Classical Ballet is a healthy activity for children as they learn to express themselves via graceful and flowing movements whilst also developing motor skills, coordination, rhythm, musicality and poise. Ballet provides the technique, posture, discipline, balance and strength for all dance styles and is a must for those wishing to excel in their dance training.
At Harlow School of Dance our students are trained in the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) syllabus and classes are available from Pre-Primary to Majors. The RAD was established in London in 1920, and today is one of the largest and most internationally recognized dance training organisations in the world.
Students who wish to participate in examinations in Classical Ballet must participate in two lessons per week.
Pointe classes are available for Beginners (Grade 6 Ballet) and Senior (Intermediate & Advanced Ballet) Students. Classes in Classical Ballet are a pre-requisite for participation in Pointe Class.
JAZZ
Jazz Dance incorporates a variety of dance styles from Broadway musicals of stage and screen to the latest music videos on Video Hits. Classes include exercises for flexibility and strength as well as a range of dance styles from the expressive to the athletic. Benefits include fitness and coordination, as children develop a healthy body in a fun environment.
TAP
Tap is for aspiring Ginger Rogers or Tap Dogs. Our classes include technical beats as well as fun routines. Classes start from Tiny Tots all the way up to Adult Tap.
Tap training enhances speed and agility, using challenging rhythms and sounds. It promotes fitness and musicality while increasing mind-body coordination. It can be slow and expressive or fast and dynamic, but most of all, tap is fun!
CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary is based on classical ballet and modern dance techniques, safe dance practice and anatomical principles of movement. There is a strong focus on off centre work, working into the ground (opposing the height of Classical Ballet) and the use of parallel and turn out. Contemporary movements range from soft, flowing and lyrical to abstract, static and angular. Much of the choreography is considered to be experimental. At Harlow School of Dance we offer classes in the CDA (Contemporary Dance Association) syllabus, as well as non-syllabus classes.
HIP HOP OR FUNK
Hip Hop & Funk is originally from the streets of New York and is now seen in many music videos. Separate classes are available for Adults, Teenagers and Children. We offer BBDS (Broken Beat Dance Syllabus) Hip Hop so that our classes are not only fun and funky but also progressive and well structured. Hip Hop is suitable for students with little or no dance experience through to advanced dancers. Classes include warm-ups and dance combinations, which are great for fitness as well as learning new skills with the freedom to express yourself through music.

Classes are based around a syllabus with time in each lesson for theatre sport games and opportunities to work on a piece written and staged by the students to be performed at the end of the year. Great for improving confidence in children and young adults in public speaking and performing. Perfect for dancers who want more stage presence or children that want to give acting a go!
